NORFOLK - Grab some peanuts, popcorn and Cracker Jack and head out to McClure Field for MWR’s Navy World Series Throwback Softball Game on Friday, June 30 as Naval Station Norfolk’s year-long centennial celebration continues. Pre-game activities kick off at noon, followed by a home run derby at 1:40 p.m. and first pitch at 2 p.m.

When the United States entered into World War II, many of the best Major League Baseball players in the country joined the service and eventually made Norfolk Naval Training Station their home. The base hosted a seven-game “Navy World Series” with lineups that rivaled any pro team from that time period. Gracing the diamond were notable pro players such as Phil Rizzuto, Pee Wee Reese, Dominic DiMaggio and Eddie Robinson.

To honor that one-of-a-kind event, Naval Station Norfolk will return to that nostalgic time when it hosts the Navy World Series Throwback Softball Game. Special guest, Eddie Robinson, will be on hand to greet spectators. The Navy veteran is the lone living member of the 1943 Naval Training Station team. Robinson had a long Major League Baseball career as both a player and coach, including being the first baseman for the 1948 World Series champion Cleveland Indians.

A treat for baseball enthusiasts and historians alike will be a walk through the history of baseball at Naval Station Norfolk, authentically reproduced historical uniforms for players, and concessions available at 1943 prices. The Norfolk Tides will take part in this historic celebration and will be available for autographs starting at noon. The Tides are the Class Triple-A minor league affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles.

In addition to the game, there will be historic photos on display, a softball home run derby before the game and Eddie Robinson will be in attendance. Carnival rides and discounted concessions such as hot dogs, peanuts, popcorn and Cracker Jack will be available, as well as reduced-priced tickets to the Norfolk Tides’ home game the following night.

Open to all authorized patrons.
